Connect a custom domain
Set a Layerpath subdomain or connect your own domain, such as demo.yourcompany.com, so share links and embed codes from your workspace use your address.
What it changes
Links copied from the Share window, and the embed codes it gives you, use the Layerpath address by default. On the Custom domain tab you can swap that for one of two options.
| Option | What you enter | DNS setup |
|---|---|---|
| A Layerpath subdomain, under Public URL | A name, such as your company's name | None |
| Your own domain, under Custom domain | A domain you control, such as demo.yourcompany.com | A CNAME record, and a TXT record if Layerpath asks for one |
Once a domain is connected, the links anyone in the workspace copies from Share use it. If you set up both, links use your own domain.
Before you start
- You're an Owner or Admin of the workspace.
- The workspace is on Pro, Team, or Enterprise. On Free, the Custom domain field shows Upgrade instead of Save, and the Share window shows Upgrade to Pro next to Custom domain.
- You can change DNS records for your domain, or you can ask the person who manages them.
Set a Layerpath subdomain
To set a Layerpath subdomain:
- Go to Settings > Custom domain.
- Under Public URL, enter a name, such as your company's name. The rest of the address shows next to the field.
- Select Save. You'll see "Domain saved".
Share links use the subdomain when no custom domain is connected. The field is locked while a subdomain is saved, so to change it, delete it first and then enter the new name.
Connect your own domain
Steps 4 and 5 happen in your DNS provider. The rest happen in Layerpath.
To connect your own domain:
- In Layerpath, go to Settings > Custom domain.
- Under Custom domain, enter your domain in the field after https://, for example demo.yourcompany.com.
- Select Save. You'll see your domain marked "Domain verification pending", next to the value cname.vercel-dns.com.
- In your DNS provider, add the CNAME record from the table below.
- If Layerpath lists a TXT record under your domain, add that record in your DNS provider too.
- Back in Layerpath, select Refresh. When the status stops saying "Domain verification pending", links from the Share window use your domain.
| Record | Name | Value | When to add it |
|---|---|---|---|
| CNAME | The part of your domain before your main domain, such as demo | cname.vercel-dns.com | Always |
| TXT | _vercel | The value Layerpath shows | Only when Layerpath shows a TXT record |
Select the copy icon next to a value to copy it. Once your domain is connected, the app says you can remove the TXT record.
Limits
- The tab holds one Layerpath subdomain and one custom domain at a time.
- Some subdomain names are reserved, such as app, blog, help, and share. Layerpath says "Domain not allowed" when you pick one.
- A domain can be connected to only one workspace. If another workspace already uses it, you'll see "Domain already mapped".
Remove a domain
To remove a subdomain or your custom domain, select the trash can icon next to it. You'll see "Domain deleted". It's removed right away, with no confirmation. Links copied after that use the next option: your Layerpath subdomain if you have one, then the Layerpath address.
If you change plans
If the workspace moves to a plan without custom domains, the Custom domain tab says "Custom-domain sharing is disabled on your current plan." It also says your domain settings are saved, and that upgrading turns custom-domain sharing back on. Until then, links copied from the Share window use the Layerpath address.
If something goes wrong
- The status still says "Domain verification pending": check the records in your DNS provider against the table above, wait, then select Refresh again.
- You see "Domain is misconfigured": the CNAME record is missing or points somewhere else. Point it to cname.vercel-dns.com, then select Refresh.
- You see "Cannot add invalid domain name": check the spelling, and enter only the domain, without https:// or a path.
